There is something curious about this shift in message the Republican Party has been orchestrating for some time now. Let there be no mistake - the original intent of entering Iraq was to find “weapons of mass destruction” that were allegedly pointing towards every American city, poised to fire at any second.
To date, there have been zero WMDs found. Conveniently, the administration restated our original motivations, becoming IRAQI FREEDOM and LIBERATION.
Perhaps it is the cynic in me, but I believe this reinforces the idea that we entered the country simply for capitalistic gain. The same imperialism that Britain enforced over the world, we now bring to Iraq. Haliburton, anyone? (hint: EAST INDIA TRADING COMPANIES)
Therefore, I do not see the above image as a defacement of a noble image. Rather, I see it as a reappropriation that ironically stresses the conquering nature of America and her dramatically changed intentions from WWII to this so-called “War on Terror”. Do note the McDonalds sign is in Arabic.
